Witch Doctrine is available for pre-order!

Witch Doctrine is now available for pre-order through the University of Akron Press website here! I’m so pleased with the beautiful work Amy Freels did with the design of the book. I have loved Kelly Louise Judd’s work for years, and I’m so thrilled her piece Blue Meadow is gracing the cover. I can’t say enough about how wonderful Mary Biddinger and the University of Akron press team have been to work with; it’s a dream come true.

I’m also so grateful for the kind blurbs that Kerri Webster and Tony Trigilio wrote for the book:

Knowing that our doctrines are woefully inadequate, Annah Browning has crafted a new one that takes into account ghostly appetites, egg rituals, ectoplasm, uncanny daughters. “I went a long way into the disquiet,” the speaker tells us in communiques that show a woman alchemized into tender fearlessness. Opalescent as an eye, glinting as a sharpened tooth, Witch Doctrine is a dazzling debut.

— Kerri Webster

With their seamless traffic between worlds, the lush, syntactically taut poems in Annah Browning’s terrific debut collection blur the boundary between the “natural” and “supernatural.” Witch Doctrine invites us to see and hear like we never have before—a wisdom as tactile as it is necessarily unsettling: “Don’t be afraid / of the wasp prickling // its slim legs on / the hair of your arm. // Listen.” Browning’s occult personae do not speak from the margins of myth and legend—their witch doctrine is not a mere flicker at the corner of the eye. Instead, they come to us directly and vulnerably with “one leg // in this world, one slung over / into the next.”

—Tony Trigilio

While the book is released officially on April 7th, 2020, if you happen to be in San Antonio for this year’s AWP conference, you can pick up a copy at the University of Akron Press table at the book fair, as well. I’ll be doing a book signing and two readings during AWP— come say hello!
